CHARTWELL INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL

A Strong Foundation for Early Learning

The programme is guided by the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS), providing a structured yet flexible framework that supports children’s development, wellbeing, and early academic readiness.

It encourages curiosity, confidence, and a positive approach to learning from the very beginning.

A Holistic Approach to Development

The EYFS is built around seven key areas of learning, supporting the whole child.

The three prime areas—communication and language, physical development, and personal, social, and emotional development—form the foundation for all future learning. These are complemented by literacy, mathematics, understanding the world, and expressive arts and design.

Learning at an Individual Pace

Every child develops in their own way. A supportive and nurturing environment allows children to progress at their own pace, building confidence and independence.

Close collaboration with families ensures that each child receives the best possible start to their educational journey.

Prime Areas of Development

Personal, Social and Emotional Development

Children develop confidence, form positive relationships, and learn to manage their feelings and behaviour.

They begin to share, take turns, and build a strong sense of self.

Physical Development

Children develop both gross and fine motor skills, while building awareness of health, movement, and self-care.

Independence is encouraged through everyday routines and activities.

Communication and Language

Children develop listening skills, understanding, and the ability to express themselves clearly.

Vocabulary, speech, and early communication are supported through rich language experiences.

Specific Areas of Learning

Literacy

Children develop a love of books and early writing through engaging activities.

Phonics and early reading skills are introduced, including the use of the Jolly Phonics approach.

Mathematics

Children explore numbers, counting, shapes, and patterns through practical, hands-on learning.

Early concepts of time, space, and measurement are introduced in meaningful contexts.

Understanding the World

Children explore nature, their environment, and the wider world.

They develop awareness of people, communities, and technology through everyday experiences.

Expressive Arts and Design

Creativity is encouraged through music, movement, art, and imaginative play.

Children express themselves through storytelling, role play, and creative exploration.
